Tribute To The Lions 50 Years On!!

The Lisbon Lions is the nickname given to the Celtic team that won the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional near Lisbon, Portugal on 25 May 1967, defeating Inter Milan 2–1.

Celtic were the first British club to win the European Cup, and still the only Scottish club to have reached the final. Celtic are one of only three clubs to have won a “Quintuple”

 1. Ronnie Simpson (Goalkeeper)

  1. Jim Craig (Right back)
  2. Tommy Gemmell (Left back)

  3. Bobby Murdoch (Right half)

  4. Billy McNeill (Captain, Centre half)

  5. John Clark (Centre half)

  6. Jimmy Johnstone (Outside right)

  7. Willie Wallace (Centre forward)

  8. Stevie Chalmers (Centre forward)

  9. Bertie Auld (Left half)

  10. Bobby Lennox (Outside left)

  11. John Fallon (substitute Goalkeeper, not used)

  • Jock Stein (Manager)

  • Sean Fallon (Assistant Manager)

  • Neil Mochan (Coach/Trainer)

Notes: Celtic did not wear numbers on their shirts at this time. The numbers shown were sewn onto their shorts.

A second goalkeeper was the only substitute allowed at the time.

1967: Celtic win European Cup
Celtic has become the first British team to win the European Cup, beating favourites Internazionale Milan 2-1.

An estimated crowd of 70,000 crammed into the Portuguese National Stadium in Lisbon to witness the Glasgow side lift the greatest prize in club football.

When you think about the epic sweep of the Lisbon Lions story, you have to wonder what was the greater of the miracles that happened back then – the fact that, 50 years ago, 11 local lads won the European Cup or the fact that, as a team, they existed at all.

Glasgow 1967: The Lisbon Lions will be shown on BBC One Scotland at 21:00 on Wednesday 24 May. It can be seen in other parts of the United Kingdom at 23:20.
